INTRODUCTION:

There ls по better example of the Japanese post-war industrial mlracle than Honda. Uke other companles Which have become household namcs, it startcd with one man’s vision. ln this case the man was the 40-уеаг old Soichlro Honda who l1ad sold his piston-ring manuracturing business to Toyota ln 1945 and was happily spending the proceeds on prolonged parties for his friends. However, the difficulties of getting around in the chaos of post-war Japan irked Honda.

• so when he came across а job lot or generator eпgines he realised that here was а way of getting people moЫle again at low cost. А 12 Ьу 18-foot shack in Hamamatsu became h1s first Ыkе factory, fitting the generator motors into pushЫkes.
• Before long he’d used up all 500 generator motors and Honda С70 and С90 OHV-engined models started manufacturlng hls own engine, known as the ‘ chirnпey’ , either because of the elongated cylinder head or the srnoky exhaust or perhaps both Тhе chimпey made all of haff а horsepower from lts 50 се engiпe but it was а major success and became tl1e Honda A-type. Less ‘fhan two years after he’d set up iп Harnamatsu, Soichiro Honda founded the Honda Motor Company in September 1948.
• Ву then, the A-type had Ьееп developed lnto the 90 се B-type englne, which мr Honda decided deserved its own chass,s not а b1cycle frame. Honda was about to become Japan’s first post-war manufacturer of complete rnotorcycles. 111 August 1949 the first prototype was ready. With an output of three horsepower, the 98 се 0-type was stlll а simple two-stroke but it had а two-speed transmission and most importantly а pressed steel frame with telescoplc forks and hard tail rear end.
• Тhе frame was almost triangular ln profile with the top rai/ going ln а straigl1t line from the massively braced steering head to the rear axle. Legend has 11 that after the 0- type’s flrst tests the entlre workforce went for а driпk to celebrate апd try and think of а name for the Ыkе. One mап broke one of those sllences you get when people are thinking, exclaiming ‘Тhis Is llke а dream!’ ‘That’s it!’ shouted Honda, and so the Honda Dream was christened.
