• Open-top vehicles have always been an important cornerstone of the Porsche model range. When the 911 was developed, its percentage of turnover was around 17 percent.
• It was therefore clear that the first 911 should also be available as an open-top version. Because of indications that cabriolets without roll-over protection would be banned on the US market – an important market for Porsche – a completely new safety concept had to be designed for cabriolets.
• During a preliminary model inspection at the end of 1963, Ferry and Ferdinand Alexander Porsche decided that the roll-over bar should be employed as standard.
• The Cabriolet design with fixed main bar, dividing the convertible top into a removable front and rear roof section, then went into series production. The main reason for this decision was no longer the fear that open-top vehicles without improved safety features would be banned in the USA, but the design aspect.
• The roll-over bar had become a striking design element. The Targa therefore became the world’s first ever safety cabriolet and Porsche decided to use a black leatherette trim on the onepiece, removable front roof section. A quick-folding roof system, which could be stowed more easily, was also available as an extra.
• The rear roof section with a plastic window was zipped to the roll-over bar and could be folded down and lowered. This variable design meant that the original Targa offered a choice of four different roof positions: •
• Targa Hardtop with convertible top completely closed • Targa Spyder with convertible top completely open • Targa Voyage with quick-folding roof • Targa Bel Air with front roof section open or rear window open The Targa was a success from day one and the main attraction at the International Motor Show (IAA) 1965 in Frankfurt because as reported in a press release at the time:
• “The Targa is neither a cabriolet nor a coupé, neither a hardtop nor a saloon, but something totally new.”
