DESCRIPTION:

All engines are stamped on the right-hand side of the cylinder block with a type designation and serial number, e.g. 455001/4001 or 449002/1001, etc. The engine designation number is built up according to the following formula, commencing at the left:

• First digit — number of cylinders.
• Second and third digits—together these give the nominal capacity, in cubic inches, of one cylinder. (The approximate capacity, in cubic inches, of an engine can be obtained by multiplying the first digit by the second and third digits, e.g.: 4X55 = 220 cu. in. and 4X49 =196 cu.in.)
• Fourth digit —type of fuel: 0 for diesel (1 would be gasoline). Fifth digit—design series: 0 is the first series and 1 is the second, etc. This number is used to identify engines which are in different forms to suit different tractor frames.
• ‘ Sixth digit—type of clutch: 1 Livedrive, 2 single plate, 5 twin-plate.
