The Bucyrus-Erie organization has been building power shovels since 1882 and over 123,000 machines have left our plants. In the following pages we have attempted to outline some of the things that we have found important in the operation of excavating machinery-with the idea of helping the efficient operation of BucyrusErie machines.

• We will always welcome suggestions from the field for the increasing of output, for the lowering of maintenance costs, and for making it easier to care for the machine.
• Although, we realize there are many good methods of obtaining the same result, in describing the care, operation and maintenance, we have limited ourselves to telling about that method which, in each case, has proved itself most satisfactory for average conditions.
• The great diff erence in matt’rial these machines are called upon to handle, and the great difference in local conditions make it impossible to give precise instructions exactly suitable for every case. It will be necessary in many cases to work out some of the more minute details, taking into consideration knowledge of tht: particular job on which the machine is employed.
