Operation
The main rotating parts are the drive shaft (1), the
distributor rotor (2), the transfer pump (3) and the
balance-weight cage (8).
The drive shaft drives the distributor rotor inside the
hydraulic head (6). The drive end of the rotor
incorporates 4 pump plungers (4).
The plungers are actuated simultaneously by an
internal cam ring (5) via rollers and pads fitted in slots
at the drive end of the rotor. The number of cam bosses
is generally equal to the number of engine cylinders.
The transfer pump (3) located at the rear of the rotor is
a vane-type displacement pump contained within the
end-cap. This cap also encloses the inlet port for the
supply pump, the fuel filter and the pressure regulator
(7). The supply pump pressure is automatically
adjusted to compensate for the effects of viscosity
associated with temperature changes and any
variation in the type of fuel.
The distributor rotor has two inlet ports and a single
axial (passage) with an outlet port to supply all the
outlets on the hydraulic head (6) from the injection
pipes. The rotor turns in the hydraulic head bore. The
bore for the regulator valve (11), the inlet ports and the
outlet couplings are located inside the head.
This pump includes its own mechanical regulator. The
centrifugal force on the balance-weights (8) in their
cage, is transmitted to an arm on the regulator by a
sleeve and to the regulator valve via a direct hinge joint.
It is possible to shut off the fuel by closing the regulator
valve via a direct hinge joint controlled by a shut-off lever
operated independently.
The automatic advance correction (9), advances or
retards (hydraulically) the start of fuel supply by the
pump. The advance responds to engine speed
changes only, or to a combination of changes in engine
speed and load.
The fuel drawn from the fuel tank by the supply pump,
after passing through the filter, is routed via the inlet
filter basket to the pump inlet port. A certain amount of
fuel is diverted to the suction side by the pressure
regulating system.
Under the effect of transfer pump pressure, the fuel
passes through the centre of the rotor (2) and exits
beyond the rotor retainer from a circular groove in the
latter. It then passes along a connecting channel in the
head to the automatic advance correction, then rises
in a radial channel, and reaches the regulating valve via
a connecting channel. The radial position of the
regulator valve, which is controlled by the regulator,
regulates the fuel flow which is then fed into the radial
inlet channels which incorporate the inlet ports for the
head.
When the rotor turns, the two inlet channels in the rotor
align with the inlet ports in the distributor head,
enabling the fuel to flow into the pumping chamber. As
rotation continues, the inlet channels move out of
alignment and the rotor outlet port aligns with one of
the outlets in the head. Whilst the outlet port is open,
the rollers contact the cam bosses, pushing the
plungers one towards the other. The fuel trapped
between the plungers is then pressurised and fed via
the injectors into the combustion chamber
