INTRODUCTION:
These notes are intended to provide a basic knowledge of the regulator theory,
regulator tune-up procedure and trouble shooting guidance. They cannot, of
course, cover all the possible details associated with the excavator but an
understanding of the material here will provide a good foundation for those
involved with the machine control functions. Those responsible for tune-up,
maintenance and trouble shooting should keep these notes readily available
and add supplementary notes based on experience with the control.
MODES OF OPERATION:
- A DC motor is capable of acting as a motor or a brake. The various modes
of operation can be determined by knowing the direction of rotation and whether
the motor is providing energy to drive n In.id or pmviclin”, hrakinr. action by
absorbing energy from the load. - Hoisting always requires the motor to provide energy to lift a load.
Therefore, this is a MOTORING operation. On the other hand lowering usually
requires the motor to hold back the load and is an OVERHAULING condition.
That is, the force of gravity tries to accelerate the load beyond the intended
speed, and the motor must actually provide a braking action. - REGENERATIVE action is similar to the overhauling condition in that the motor
must provide braking action. However, the term REGENERATION is reserved for a
transient operation. For example, the torque required to decelerate a lowering
load to rest is a regenerative operation. Regeneration may also occur in the
hoisting direction. This is because the motor tries to slow the drive down
faster than the weight of the load can decelerate the inertia of the drum and
other rotating parts. Under this condition, the motor actually provides a
braking effort to help slowdown the drive.
