GENERAL PRECAUTIONS

Here is a complete list of items you are requested to comply with when doing your service jobs. Keep them and safeguard yourself and your colleagues against accidents that go hand in hand with carelessly served machines.

Removal and Disassembly

1. Drained lubricant is not just a waste and useless liquid only to be discarded. But it is an eloquent reference material whose viscosity, color and content of impurities can tell an extent to which gears, bearings, etc. are worn.
2.  Before disassembling any component of the machine, put marks on its parts whenever you think fit to do so. This helps avoid confusion in reassembly. Take piston valves, for instance, which are all of the same size and shape. Mark each valve clearly so it is put back into the same cylinder as before.
3. Removal or disassembly of some of the machine components calls for the use of special tools and jigs specified in this manual. Others may be worked with those your experience says most suitable and least likely to cause damage.
4. When any parts that should remain solidly interconnected – – just fitted together or taper matched get loose during disassembly of some related component, see why. Repair or replace them if they are worn or marred.
5. Wash and clean each disassembled part, arrange the cleaned parts in groups, and keep them shielded against dust and dirt until reassembly. The washing job will be highly facilitated if performed with oil contained in two separate tanks, one for initial “dirt removal” and the other for 11 rinse. 11 Use extra care when cleaning filters, magnetic plug, breather and other units that are easy to deteriorate in function when clogged or otherwise soiled.
6. Shims and the like used for clearance adjustment, once removed, should be kept neatly arranged and clearly marked. They have to be put back in place in exactly the same state as before.
7. Generator, regulator, starting motor, batteries, etc. demand expert skill and rather sophisticated facilities for disassembly and assembly. Leave their repair to veterans in specialty shops or Hitachi dealers.
