Engine Maintenance Precautions
1. Engine Maintenance Precautions
1. ESM Maintenance Precautions
The exclamation point alerts you to the risk of electric shock. To avoid shock and possible serious injury, do not
touch the terminals. Before disconnecting the ESM connectors, be sure to turn off the starter switch or
disconnect the battery.
The ESM is designed to support the normal current draw associated with vehicle operation.
Make sure the vehicle is not overloaded. When performing open or short circuit tests
, do not ground or apply voltage to any of the ECM circuits unless instructed to do so
. When performing these circuit tests, be sure that the ECM is turned off. The ECM must remain connected to the ECM body.

2. Commercial electronic equipment:

  • Aftermarket electronic equipment refers to commercially available electronic equipment that is installed in the vehicle after it has been delivered from the factory. Be careful, as such accessories have not been taken into account, particularly at the design stage of the vehicle. Aftermarket electronic
equipment may cause faults in the electronic control system, although it is common to install such equipment. Aftermarket electronic equipment includes devices connected to the vehicle’s electrical system, such as radios or mobile phones. Therefore, when diagnosing problems in the electrical system, first check to see if any of these aftermarket electronic equipment is installed and, if so, remove it from the vehicle. If the problem is not resolved after removing the equipment, follow the normal procedure for diagnosing it.
