FOREWORD

This Service Manual is designed for use by the mechanic. The first section covers safe work practices, machine description and specifications of the machine as well as other general information. All maintenance personnel should read and understand the materials in this manual before performing maintenance and/or operational checks on the machine. All safety notices, warnings and cautions should be understood and followed when accom- plishing repairs on the machine.
The major portion of the manual pertains to disassembly, service and re- assembly. Each major mechanical division is dealt with individually.

• For example: The disassembly, service and reassembly of the radiator group is discussed as a unit. The same is true of the engines and engine accessories, final drives and so on through the entire mechanical detail of the machine. Thus, if you have a repair problem on your machine, all material pertaining to that part or parts will be grouped together in one section, ready for your quick reference and use.
• Disassembly should be carried only as far as neces- sary to accomplish needed repairs. Unnecessary disassembly wastes time and money and increases possibiliites of further repair requirements. One prime aim of this manual is to help you, the mechanic, become fully knowledgeable of the machine and all its systems. A fully qualified technician helps to keep the machine running and in production.
• The illustrations used in this manual are, at times, typical of the component shown and do not necessarily refer to any one particular machine.
• All location references “right” or “left” are made in respect to the operator’s normal seated position.
  Adoption of the International System of Units (SI) is underway in the U.S. industrial community. This manual shows dual dimensioning of U.S. standard and metric SI units throughout. Two exceptions are shown in torque figures and pressures. U.S. and common metric designations (pre-SI) are shown in the text with conversions to SI units provided in conversion charts in Section “N”.
• Standard and special torque requirements are shown in torque charts in the general information section and individual torques are provided in the text in bold face type: such as 100 ft. lbs. (135 N-m).
