FOR SAFE OPERATION :

How to be a careful and safe operator

(1) Carefully read through the operating manual to familiarise yourself fully with all of the machine controls before using your tractor.

(2) Never allow the persons listed below to operate the tractor: • Persons with a mental illness • Persons incapable of operating the tractor properly due to fatigue, illness or drowsiness as a result of taking medication etc. • Pregnant women • Young persons or children too young to be legally permitted to operate the tractor To remain alert, get into the habit of taking a break at regular intervals. (3) Wear suitable clothing and protective equipment during operation. • Head protection Protect your head by wearing a helmet, especially if the tractor is to be driven on public roads or when carrying out operations above head height. • Protect yourself from being caught up in the machine Wear tight fitting clothes and a helmet, as loose fitting clothes and hair can get caught in moving parts of the machine. • Protection against dust or toxic gases Always wear protective equipment when handling toxic chemical products to protect the respiratory system, eyes and skin. • Ear protection Wear ear plugs or take suitable precautions to protect your ears when operating the machine under extremely noisy conditions. • Maintenance of protective equipment Periodically inspect protective equipment to ensure that it is working correctly. Use this equipment at all times.

PRIOR TO OPERATION :

(1) Organise your schedule of work, allowing yourself sufficient time. An overloaded schedule may result in unexpected accidents due to work being carried out in a hurry.
(2) To ensure optimum operation, periodically inspect and service the tractor by following the instructions contained in the operating manual. Pay special attention to the controls-particularly the brakes and the clutch–and the machine safety instructions when carrying out maintenance. The risk of accidents will be considerably reduced if the machine is operating correctly and normally. If safety devices are damaged or not working, consult your Massey Ferguson dealer.
(3) Before removing a safety device such as a bonnet, you must ensure that the machine has come to a complete stop. Once the maintenance has been carried out, always remember to refit the parts that were removed.
(4) Never fill with fuel when the engine is running or when the engine is still hot. Never smoke or bring naked flames into the vicinity of the fuel tank or the tractor when refilling with fuel. Never use naked flames to provide light when filling the tractor with fuel at night.

STARTING THE ENGINE AND MOVING THE TRACTOR:

(1) Before starting the engine in an enclosed area, check to make sure that there is adequate ventilation as exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which is a toxic gas that can cause lethal poisoning.
(2) Before starting the engine, check that the correct speed has been selected, check that there is nobody near the tractor and check that the implement is properly secured to the tractor. Always drive the tractor while seated in the operator’s seat. Never leave the seat when the tractor is in operation, except in an emergency.
(3) Before starting to drive away, always check the safety conditions around the machine to avoid causing injury to persons or damage to equipment and property. Never operate the tractor in sudden movements.

DRIVING:

(1) When driving on public roads, lock the brake pedals together using the locking plate to prevent the tractor from overturning if one of the wheels should lock. (Mechanical transmission)
(2) When driving on public roads, always unlock the differential to prevent the tractor from overturning.
(3) Do not take tight corners at speed or during transport, as the tractor could overturn.
(4) When working on unstable ground, such as a rough track, a slope, a road alongside a ditch or a river, or even on undeveloped land, drive the tractor at slow speed and proceed with care.
(5) Do not make sharp turns on a slope as the tractor could overturn. When climbing a slope, select the most suitable ratio. Start moving the tractor as slowly as possible. Never change gear when climbing a slope. When starting to climb a slope, check to ensure that the front wheels do not lift. When descending a slope, drive at a slower speed than the speed used to climb the slope. During the descent, you must never disengage the clutch and never select neutral. Never attempt to control the speed using only the brakes. Use engine braking effectively.
(6) When driving on a road where one or both verges are sloped and running alongside a ditch, watch out for unstable verges, especially if the ditch is filled with water and take care not to allow the tractor to skid sideways.
(7) Do not allow other persons to climb onto the tractor or the i mple ment, unless there is a seat or a platform provided for sitting or standing and only within the specified capacity. Never allow anyone to climb onto the implement when driving on a public road.
(8) Always park the tractor on a hard and level surface and take the necessary precautions, by lowering the implement to the ground, re moving the key, applying the parking brakes and correctly chocking the wheels.
(9) Keep inflammable products well away from the engine during operation. Do not run the engine at high speed, especially when the vehicle is stationary, to avoid setting fire to any grass or straw that may be in contact with the exhaust pipe or hot exhaust gases.
(10) When operating the tractor at night, familiarise yourself with the location of all of the controls. This will help prevent accidental operation of the tractor. When driving on public roads, never switch on the work lights (option).
LOADING AND UNLOADING THE TRACTOR:
(1) When loading the tractor onto a truck or a trailer, switch off the tractor engine and apply the parking brakes of the transporting vehicle. Otherwise, the transporting vehicle may move and the tractor may fall to the ground.
(2) Pay attention to the safety conditions around the tractor and ask someone to guide you to assist with the operation. Never allow anyone to come near the tractor, especially in front or behind it.
(3) Use non-slip ramps to load and unload the tractor onto a truck and ensure that the slope of the ramps is equal. Drive the tractor in a straight line at a suitably slow speed. Use reverse travel to load the tractor and forward travel to unload the tractor.
(4) Always lock the left and right-hand brakes together beforehand. Never depress the brake pedals or the clutch pedal when loading or unloading the tractor onto or off the platform. This could cause the tractor to run off course and fall off the ramps.
(5) If the engine should suddenly stall when on the ramps, immediately depress the brake pedals and allow the tractor to roll onto the ground while operating the brake pedals. Restart the engine when the tractor is on the ground and recommence the operation.
(6) Once the tractor is loaded onto the truck, switch off the engine, apply the parking brakes and remove the ignition key, then chock the wheels and tie the tractor down securely to the platform using ropes. Do not make sharp and unnecessary turns during transport to prevent the tractor from moving around on the platform.
(7) Use ramps of a specification equivalent to or above the cited specifications. If the tractor is equipped with implements other than those covered by the specifications mentioned below, ask for advice from your Massey Ferguson dealer. Ramp specifications • Length: 4 times greater than the height of the truck platform. • Width (effective width): ………. more than 35 cm • Capacity (one ramp): ……….. more than 1000 kg • The surface of the ramps must be non-slip.
(8) Securely attach the ramps to the truck platform, fitting the top such that it is level with the platform.
(9) Always be prepared for the worst; never allow anyone to come near the tractor.
(10) When the tractor moves from the ramps onto the platform, proceed with care, as it changes angle abruptly.
DURING OPERATION:
(1) When the tractor is in operation, never allow anyone to enter the vicinity of the tractor, as the tractor itself or projecting objects may cause injury.
(2) Remain vigilant and check the area around the tractor to prevent injury to persons nearby or causing damage to equipment or property. Always use the horn to warn the people you are working with.
(3) When crossing a ditch or an embankment, or when operating on loose ground, drive slowly and in a straight line to prevent the tractor from slipping or from overturning.
(4) Do not touch dangerous parts, such as hot or rotating parts (silencer, radiator, engine etc.), or electrical parts (battery terminals and other parts supplied with power), as this may result in serious injury.
(5) When using a trailer, the trailer must be suitable for your tractor. An incorrect type of trailer can cause serious accidents. Never attempt to transport loads that exceed the capacity of the machine. If necessary, contact your Massey Ferguson dealer for more information.
