• Thu 1100 Modul tractor is equipde with a two cylinder, in-line, four-cycle liquid cooled, overhead valve diese! engine. The engine model can be identified by a code number cast into the side of the cvlindcr block.
• The term “four-cycle” describes the fact that fOLII strokes of the pistons — INTAKE, COM- PRESSION, POWER and EXHAUST — and two revolutions of the crankshaft are required to deliver one power impulse to the crankshaft. To allow the entry of air and the release cl cxhaufl gases, each cylinder has a set of valves which open and close the passams between the air intake on the right sido of the engine and the exheust nassage and muffler on the left side of the engine. The vaives are located in e cylinder head bolted to the top of the cylinder block and me opened against spring pressure by a valve train timed to the relation of the crankshah.
• The valve train for each cylinder consists of a pivot shalt and sets ol rocker arms, push rods and Iifters. The rocker arms are retained on the pivot shal t hy seen rings located at each end of the shaft. The shaft itself is mounted in a support pedestel which is bolted to the cylinder head.
• The rocker arms are actueted by push rods which provide the mechanical link between the Iifters and the rocker arms. To provide the push rad up and down motion, the Iifter “rides” on a camshaft which is gear driven by the crankshaft.
• To support the camshait, ball bearings are positioned in the cylinder block at each end of the shaft. In addition to the camsheft the cvlinder block contains the pistons and cranksheft.
• The pistons are closely fitted into machined bares called cylinders and are attached to the crankshaft by connecting rods. ‘lhe up and down motion of the plstons is transmitted by the connecting red to the crankshaft where it is converted to rotational motion.
• The crankshaft is supported in the cylin— der block on bearings located at each end of the shaft. The front bearing is pasitianed in a bare in the front of the cylinder block while the rear of the shaft is supported by a bearing installed in the rear CDVET.
