• All gears in the transmission are constantly in nesh. i.e. engaged uhile the engine clutch is engaged. Shifting selects the position of the collars which engage the splines on the gears to those on the particular shafts. To assist the splines to engage it is necessary to allow some notion within the transmission.
• This is an essential step in gear shifting since the transnissicn input is stopped by an internal clutch brake when the clutch pedal is fully depressed, i.e. disengaged. The transmission is constantly ongaged to the front and rear axle drive train, therefore it is necessary to stop the tractor to select the required speed.
