GENERAL

Transmission Troubleshooting

It is strongly recommended to use the transmission diagnostic forms that have been designed for use with each specific transmission in each specific model. The diagnostic form has a series of questions to complete that will help determine the transmission’s condition and failure area.

• The proper use of these diagnostic forms can save hours of time, improve overall efficiency and assist in communications with UCA factory personnel.
• It is important to remember a few things when investigating transmission issues and/or requesting technical assistance. Ensure the engine is performing to specifications.
• Many times after investigating reports of transmission or torque converter issues it is learned that the root cause of the problem was due to the engine not performing to specification and only needed some adjustments.
•  Make sure the inching mechanism is properly adjusted by using the appropriate pressure gauge to validate where the pressure starts to drop. You can not properly adjust the inching mechanism without one. Refer to the “ADJUSTMENT” specifications in this section.
•  Perform your transmission stall test. Refer to “INSPECTION” stall speed in this section.
• Once the stall test is complete, it is time to perform the pressure test. It is recommended to install good quality liquid filled gauges in all the available test ports at one time prior to testing.
• This will give you a better picture of any potential issues by allowing you to see exactly how each clutch pack assembly react independently of the other as the transmission is shifted from one direction to the other.
• Make sure that the unit still has the front (drive) wheels block up off the ground and that the rear (steer) wheels are chocked. Once the gauges are installed, start the engine and inspect all of the pressures at idle. Document each in the appropriate space on the diagnostic from.
• Put the forklift in forward, then in reverse and document those readings. Now accelerate the engine to approximately 1,500 – 1,700 RPM’s and document the pressure readings in the same fashion as at idle.
•  When all of the tests are complete and documented, please review the information you have collected. This information will usually point you in the general area of an issue or confirm there is no issue with the transmission.
