One of the best parts about working on the Star Trek television shows and movies was that we were occasionally able to sneak a friend onto the Paramount lot to see the “real” Enterprise.

• We weren’t supposed to do this, of course, but those sets were really cool. Fortunately, our producers usually smiled tolerantly and looked the other way. (Well, at least as long as we didn’t do something dumb like walking in while the cameras were rolling!)
• As with most soundstages, the Star Trek interiors were usually surrounded by a tangle of lights, cables, and various arcane tools of filmmaking, a constant reminder that this was make-believe. Not to mention other small details, like the fact that the sets were obviously made from plywood and that they were nailed to the floor of a Hollywood soundstage.
