General Information:
ENGINE INTRODUCTION:
The GM 3.0 liter engine is a water-cooled, 4-cylinder, in-line, single-cam, overhead-valve gasoline engine. The main
specifications are shown in Chapter 2.
The cylinders are numbered from front to rear; 1, 2, 3, 4. The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
Cylinder Heads
The cast iron cylinder head is held in place by 10 bolts. The spark plugs are located between the valves on the right
side of the cylinder head assembly.
Valves-Valve Springs
The valves are arranged in-line and inclined. The rocker support and the valve guides are cast integral with the
heads. The valve clearance is controlled to zero by hydraulically operated tappets that compensate for wear and
temperature changes, eliminating the need for adjustment.
Pistons-Connecting Rods
The pistons are made of cast aluminum alloy using two compression rings and one oil control ring assembly. The
piston pins are a press fit in the connecting rods and a floating fit in the pistons.
Cooling System
The centrifugal water pump is installed over the timing chain cover. It is driven by a belt from the crankshaft. A
thermostat is used to ensure proper coolant temperature. The cooling fan is belt-driven.
