DESCRIPTION:

• The differential is located in the rear frame and is mounted on two tapered roller bearings. The drive bevel gear is bolted to the differential case.
• The outer ends of the bull pinion shafts are mounted on ball bearings carried in cages assembled on the rear frame. Disk brakes are mount- ed on the shafts. See lllust.
•  Shims located between the differential bearing cages and sides of the rear frame determine the backlash between the bevel gear and drive Pinion and the preload on the tapered roller bearings supporting the differential.
• Adjustment of the drive pin- ion and bevel gear tooth contact is deter-— mined by shims between the transmission splined shaft roller bearing retainer and the machined surface of the gear box.
• Incorporated in and running through the right-hand bull pinion shaft is a differen- tial lock which is controlled by a foot pedal assembled to the right-hand disk brake housing. The differential lock connects the driving wheels as if they were mounted on a common shaft and has been introduced to help overcome wheel slippage. See lllust.
