PLC Theory of Operation

The 2570W-S dragline uses a programmable logic controller (PLC) for the following functions:

a) Auxiliary control logic

b) Motion control logic and regulator interface

c) Walk shoe synchronization regulator and shoe position indication display.

d) Motion drive travel limits

e) Antitightline Protection

f) Armature loop current supervision and display g) Temperature monitoring and display

h) Automatic lubrication

i) Hour metering

j) Machine annunciation and diagnostics (including maintenance support interfacing)

k) Special logic for rope reeving, boom raising, swing machinery lubrication protection and house heating and ventilation

The PLC has three basic parts that are functionally different. These are the processor, the input modules, and the output modules.

• Output modules are connected to devices that are to be energized as a result of PLC action. Output modules may be digital or analog modules.
• Contactor coils, valves, and pilot lamps are typical examples of digital output module devices. Reference, antitightline, etc.
• signals are examples of analog type signals. Input modules are connected to devices that signal the PLC that action is required.
• Again these may be digital or analog modules. Typical digital input module devices include control switches, pushbutton switches, limit switches, pressure switches, and auxiliary switch contacts on contactors or circuit breakers.
• Typical analog input signals are thermocouple or RTD temperature sensing and armature loop current and/or voltage sensing.

The processor reads or checks the status of all PLC inputs. It then executes the instructions in its software program using the input status information to make logical decisions.

• After the instructions in the program have been executed, the processor updates the status of all outputs.
• This cycle of updating inputs, executing the program, and updating outputs is called a scan, and the processor repeats scanning this continuously. Typical scan times are between 20 and 35 milliseconds.

Where multiple racks are used (as on the 2570W-S) a special purpose micro processor module (called an ASB) is used for each remote rack to provide communications with the main control processor (located in the local rack).

• Communication between the processor and the motion regulators is also maintained on a continuous basis so that important parameters may be monitored and corrective action taken.
• The drive regulators are for the most part self-protecting, but it is necessary for the PLC to monitor what is happening in order to properly interface between motions, the motion regulator and its input power supply, and the motion regulator and mechanical brakes, etc.
