GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Cylinder block Then der block ls Integral with  the upper half of the crankcase and is made in one piece of alloy cast iron. The main  g caps are made of nodular cast iron . The cylinder liners (In direct con­ tact w1th’the coolant) are centrifugally cast of special cast Iron  are flanged at the top for fitting into _ Sealing between the coolant jacket and the crank­ case 1s pro vided by rings of oil· and heat-resistant rubber.

Cylinder heads

Cylinder heads are made of alloy cast-iron. each covering one Cylinder. Valves and injectors are mounted in cylinder head. the latter being carried in cast-iron sleeves which are 1n direct contact with coolant. Gas sealing between block and cylinder head is executed with a steel plate gasket. Sealing around cooling and oil passages, between  and cylinder head is done with heavy duty rubber rings. Each unit is easily removable. All valve seat Inserts are made of a special alloy. Inlet port in cylinder head shaped to give incoming air a swirl which  function. This results in optimum combus­tion of injected fuel.

Valves and valve mechanism

Both inlet and exhaust valves are made of heat-resistant steel. The valve stems are chromium-plated and have exchangeable steel caps, against which the hardened thrust surfaces of the rocker arms act. Double springs on every valve. The valve clearance is adjusted with a  ball stud on the rocker arm. The pushrods. which rise against the rocker arms. are of steel tubing and are carried in cup type valve lifters of chill-hardened cast Iron. The valve mechanism is protected by a light-alloy cover.

Camshaft

The camshaft is drop-forged of alloy steel with cams and Journals hardened, ground and polished. It runs in bush­ ings in the cylinder block. The axial thrust is taken up by a flange at the front bearing. The camshaft Is driven from the crankshaft through silent-running helical gears.

Pistons The pist0n:

are made of a light alloy. The shape of the piston crown ensures optimum combustion. For the top compression ring there is a cast-iron insert to reduce the wear of the ring groove to a minimum. Compression rings and oil control ring of alloy cast-iron. Top compression ring of key Stone type. The gudgeon pins are made of case-hardened chrome steel. Piston cooling by nozzles spraying oil Imo Interior of each piston. Controlled by valve opening at 3 bar.
