Description

Deutz 914 Diesel Engine Workshop Manual – Complete Service & Repair Documentation

This Deutz 914 workshop manual is the full service and repair reference for the 914 series of air-cooled diesel engines, covering the F3L 914, F4L 914, F5L 914, F6L 914, BF3L 914/T, BF4L 914/T and BF6L 914 C/T variants. Running to 331 pages, it contains the same work card procedures, technical data tables and tightening torque specifications used by professional technicians to maintain, diagnose and overhaul these engines. Whether you are adjusting valve clearance on a naturally aspirated F4L 914 or setting the commencement of delivery on a turbocharged BF6L 914 C/T, this manual provides the procedure, the tools and the values required to do the job correctly.

Chapters Covered

The Deutz 914 service manual is divided into three top-level chapters, followed by a full set of work cards grouped by engine system.

  • 1 User Instructions
  • 2 Technical Data
  • 3 Work Cards

1 User Instructions

General safety and accident prevention regulations, disposal regulations, an explanation of the work card numbering system, and a key to the symbols used throughout the procedures. It also clarifies the relationship between the operating instructions and the workshop manual.

2 Technical Data

This chapter collects the full specification set for the 914 engine family. General engine data covers weights (from 277 kg for the F3L 914 up to 510 kg for the BF6L 914 C/T), displacement (3,236 cmยณ to 6,472 cmยณ), 102 mm bore, 132 mm stroke, compression ratio (20:1 for naturally aspirated, 18:1 for turbocharged), firing orders, rated speed of 2,500 to 2,800 min-1 and idle speed of 650 to 700 min-1. Separate sections cover the injection system (Motorpal PPM10Pi pump, RV3M350/1150-3864 governor, Bosch DLLA 146 injectors, 200 + 10 bar opening pressure), injection timing mechanism, cylinder head dimensions and wear limits (valve guides, seat inserts, valve stem diameters, spring lengths, valve recess), drive system components (piston diameters, ring groove dimensions, crankshaft journal diameters, connecting rod clearances), engine control (camshaft lift, valve timing, intermediate gear clearances, mass balancing gear backlash) and lube oil system pressures. A separate table lists bolt tightening torques for every major fastener – from cylinder head bolts (30 Nm to 45 Nm + 45ยฐ + 45ยฐ + 45ยฐ + 30ยฐ) to connecting rod bolts (20 Nm to 30 Nm + 60ยฐ + 30ยฐ) and main bearing bolts (20 Nm to 30 Nm + 60ยฐ + 45ยฐ).

3 Work Cards

Every maintenance and repair procedure in the Deutz 914 engine manual is presented as a self-contained work card. Each card lists the tools and auxiliary aids required, cross-references related cards, and walks through removal, inspection, adjustment and refitting with photographic illustrations and torque values inserted at the point of use.

General (Group 0)

Compression pressure testing using the 8005 tester and connector 100 140, plus mounting and dismounting the engine on an assembly stand with clamping angle 6066/154.

Cylinder Head (Group 1)

Valve clearance checking and adjustment (0.15 mm inlet and exhaust, cold engine), rocker arm and bracket removal/refitting, top dead centre determination with dial gauge 100 400, cylinder head removal and refitting, reworking the cylinder head sealing surface, piston crown clearance measurement with lead wire, valve removal/refitting and checking, valve guide removal/refitting and checking, and valve seat insert removal/refitting/checking with the drill jig and milling cutter set.

Drive System (Group 2)

Crankshaft checking (hardness, journal diameters, true running, axial end float), crankshaft seal renewal at coupling and opposite ends on the complete engine, connecting rod checking (small end bush, big end bore, parallelism, squareness), crankshaft removal and refitting, piston checking, and piston ring and groove checking with the trapezoid groove wear gauge.

Crankcase (Group 3)

Piston and cylinder removal and refitting, cylinder checking (bore dimensions at multiple planes), front and rear cover removal/refitting, adapter housing removal/refitting with the 14-bolt tightening schematic, and crankcase reworking including oil spray nozzle replacement and cylinder seating surface refacing with the 150 020 device.

Engine Control (Group 4)

Injection pump intermediate gear removal/refitting with gear marking alignment, and camshaft removal/refitting and checking with thrust ring and tappet inspection.

Exhaust System / Charging (Group 6)

Exhaust manifold removal/remounting (40 Nm + 4 Nm), turbocharger removal/remounting with oil line and return line renewal, and air suction pipe removal/refitting.

Fuel System (Group 7)

Injection line renewal (22 Nm to 28 Nm cap nuts), injection pump removal/refitting (including positioning bolt and compression spring installation, Woodruff key alignment, and tensioning nut torque of 170-190 Nm), commencement of delivery checking and setting by both the positioning bolt method and the high-pressure hand feed pump method, injector removal/refitting (25 to 30 Nm + 5 Nm), injector checking and adjustment (opening pressure, tightness, buzzing and spray pattern tests), and fuel line removal/refitting.

Lube Oil System (Group 8)

Oil pump removal/remounting with backlash adjustment, oil suction pipe removal/refitting, oil pan removal/remounting with oil deflector plate, oil cooler removal/remounting and cleaning, and change-over cock/filter carrier removal/remounting.

Cooling System (Group 9)

Blower removal/remounting, full blower dismantling and reassembly with ball bearing, needle bearing and shaft seal renewal, and cooling air ducting removal/remounting.

Other Components (Group 12)

Rotary vibration damper removal/remounting (left-hand thread bolt, 50 Nm + 210ยฐ) and checking, V-belt idler pulley disassembly and reassembly with bearing bush and shaft seal renewal, flywheel removal/remounting (new bolts, 30 Nm initial torque plus final turning angle), and starter ring gear renewal with the ring heated to 210ยฐC.

Electrical System (Group 13)

Three-phase alternator and support removal/remounting with V-belt tension checking, and starter removal/remounting (36.5 Nm to 44.5 Nm).

Tools and Equipment

A complete listing of the commercial tools and DEUTZ special tools referenced in the work cards, with part numbers – from the 100 400 dial gauge and 101 630 feeler gauge set through to the 150 020 cylinder seat refacing device and 170 130 assembly arbor for the V-belt idler pulley.

What This Workshop Manual Enables

If you maintain, repair or overhaul Deutz 914 series engines – whether in agricultural machinery, construction equipment, generators or industrial power units – this manual gives you the documented procedures and the exact specifications you need. The work card format means you can go straight to the job at hand: checking valve clearance on an F4L 914, setting injection timing on a BF4L 914/T, renewing a crankshaft seal, or stripping a cylinder head for a valve job. Every procedure includes the torque values, wear limits and special tools required, so you avoid the guesswork that leads to comebacks, damaged components or premature failure.
