General, Safety & Standards
The opening General chapter sets the rules for every job that follows. It contains the hazard-symbol key used throughout the manual, general safety precautions covering fluid handling, cooling-system safety, pressurised-fluid hazards and electrical safety, the standard tightening torque tables for metric and inch bolts, a full measurement-conversion set covering length, area, volume, weight, pressure, torque, power and temperature, and the CECE/SAE bucket-capacity definitions. The retorque-check table gives the first-50-hour and every-250-hour bolt checks for the upper frame, lower frame, swing bearing and undercarriage on both the LC and W variants.
Specifications & Performance Data
Chapter 01 is the reference section you will come back to constantly. It opens with the HMK 220LC and HMK 220LC-2 general dimensions, operating weights, bucket and arm options, swing and travel speeds, digging and drawbar forces, and gradeability, then breaks out the engine data for both the Cummins and Mitsubishi power units. Working-range diagrams and lift-capacity charts for the standard 5.8 m boom with 2.92 m and 2.40 m arms are included, along with track-shoe selection guidance and rated arm-crowd and bucket-curl digging forces. The lubrication chart lists the oil types and refill capacities for the engine, travel motor, swing reduction gear, hydraulic tank, fuel tank and cooling system, and the P/V proportional valve test data, relief-valve set pressures and the standard performance tests – travel speed, track running speed, straight-travel deviation, parking-brake reaction, swing speed and coasting, swing-bearing clearance and cylinder speed – are all laid out with standard and maximum limits.
Engine – Cummins B5.9-C
The Cummins section describes the 6-cylinder, 4-stroke, turbocharged, charge-air-cooled B5.9-C engine, with callouts for the fuel injection pump, lift pump, high-pressure lines, water separator, fuel filter, oil cooler, thermostat, turbocharger wastegate and the front-end belt drive. Coolant flow, fuel flow, lubrication flow, intake and exhaust routing, engine mounting bolt torques and flexible-coupling data are all shown, followed by a full engine specification sheet and the valve-clearance adjustment procedure with the TDC and 360° barring sequences.
Engine – Mitsubishi 6D34-T
The Mitsubishi chapter covers the 6D34-TLU2LD, a 5.86 L direct-injection turbocharged diesel rated at 153 hp at 2000 rpm. It contains a major-specification table, nameplate and engine-number locations, connecting-rod and piston identification, timing-gear alignment marks, compression-pressure measurement values, valve-clearance inspection with the cylinder-1/cylinder-6 TDC chart, cylinder-head and valve-mechanism disassembly and assembly sequences with the bolt tightening order and 145 N·m + 90° torque step, timing-gear backlash and idler end-play limits, camshaft inspection, piston, connecting-rod and cylinder-liner service procedures, flywheel and ring-gear service, and crankshaft and crankcase inspection. The lubrication system flow is shown pump-to-gallery, along with the fuel system, cooling system, oil pump, oil cooler, oil filter, oil-pressure switch, turbocharger, injection pump, injection nozzle and thermostat service procedures and their tightening torques.
Electrical System & Air Conditioning
Chapter 20 opens with the electrical safety precautions – welding on the machine, booster-cable starting sequence and master-switch handling – then gives the cabin, chassis and engine harness locations for both the Cummins- and Mitsubishi-engined LC-2 machines. The instrument-panel indicator and switch descriptions, the preheat/start/stop key-switch positions, fuse and relay layouts, battery master switch operation, ECU menu structure, fault-code list and connector pinouts for the display and drive units are all included. The troubleshooting section explains how to diagnose step-motor, P/V, speed-sensor and pressure-switch faults, and the stepping-motor mechanism adjustment values are given for both engines. Chapter 21 covers the integrated air-conditioning and heating system, refrigerant characteristics for R134a, component description, evacuating and charging procedures, sight-glass judgement and working pressures.
Hydraulic System
The hydraulic chapters are the largest block in the manual. The K3V112DT main pump is covered down to its disassembly and reassembly steps, worn-part replacement criteria and tightening torques, and the KR3G-9C regulator is explained in full: negative flow control, total horsepower control, variable horsepower control, adjustment of maximum and minimum flows, and fault-finding on the regulator itself. The travel motor GM35VL chapter explains the two-speed automatic switching system, brake-valve operation, parking brake, speed-change mechanism and the disassembly / assembly procedures with bearing preload and taper-roller axial-clearance adjustments. The pilot valve PV48K service chapter covers its reduction-valve structure, spool operation and full strip-down and rebuild. The UX28 main control valve is documented with major specifications, main relief, port relief, make-up valve, foot relief, centre-bypass, load-check and holding-valve operation, and step-by-step disassembly and reassembly for every cartridge. Swing motor, swivel joint and accumulator are all covered with specifications, port tables and service procedures.
Travel System
Chapter 40 describes the undercarriage: track link and shoe identification, track removal and installation, master-link and master-pin handling, lower-roller and upper-roller disassembly and assembly, link-guard torque, front-idler roller service, and the track-tension spring removal and rebuild. The track-tension adjustment table lists the correct clearance for general soil, rocky ground and moderate soil such as gravel, sand or snow, along with the grease-valve safety rules.
Attachment
Chapter 70 gives the pin-and-bushing standard and maximum clearances for every pivot on the boom, arm, bucket cylinder, link and bucket, along with the greasing-point intervals, the bucket-pin clearance-adjustment procedure using shims, and step-by-step dismounting and mounting instructions for the bucket cylinder, arm, main boom, arm cylinder, bucket cylinder and link and the bucket itself.
Why This Workshop Manual Matters
Whether you are servicing a HMK 220LC for a customer, rebuilding the travel motor on a HMK 200W, setting the main relief on a UX28 valve, chasing a charging fault through the ECU connector pinouts, or simply tensioning the tracks for the ground you are working on, the correct figure, limit and torque are in this book. The hydraulic chapters alone justify the price of admission – pump regulator adjustment, travel-motor bearing preload and taper-roller clearance, and main-control-valve cartridge disassembly are all procedures that go wrong quickly when they are done from memory. Every engine adjustment is paired with the actual clearance value and torque step, and the performance-test section gives you the standard time and maximum limit so you can prove a repair is finished rather than guess.
