Description
Komatsu D85ESS-2A and DWT065-1A Towing Winch Shop Manual – SEBM002905
The D85ESS-2A is a 200 HP class Komatsu crawler tractor built around the S6D125 six-cylinder diesel, and this is the shop manual Komatsu issued for it, bound together with the DWT065-1A towing winch in a single volume. Document number SEBM002905, covering machine serial number 3001 and up. It is not a quick-reference booklet. It is the full workshop document that tells you how each assembly is constructed, how to test it, how to take it apart and put it back together, and what the wear limits are once it is open.
One point worth knowing before you buy: the manual states that engine detail for the S6D125-1 and S6D125-2 is carried in the separate 6D125 Series and 125-2 Series Engine Shop Manual. Everything around the engine – damper, torque converter, transmission, steering clutches and brakes, final drives, undercarriage, hydraulics, electrical and the winch – is covered here.
File Details

- Engine models: S6D125-1 and S6D125-2
- Serial number coverage: D85ESS-2A, 3001 and up

Serial breakouts are handled inside the procedures rather than being buried in an appendix. The manual separates 3001-3033 from 3034 and up for engine and hydraulic pump changes, and again at 4001 and up for power train revisions, with further updates flagged at 3108 and up on the work equipment side. Where a specification, part number or diagram changes with the serial number, the manual shows which machine it applies to.
Chapters Covered
- 01 GENERAL
- 10 STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
- 20 TESTING AND ADJUSTING
- 30 DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY
- 40 MAINTENANCE STANDARD
- 90 OTHERS
01 General
General assembly drawings for the tiltdozer and angledozer machines with overall dimensions, the D85ESS-2A specification sheet, a weight table breaking components down for transport and handling, and the table of fuel, coolant and lubricants with ambient temperature ranges and capacities. The front matter also carries the standard tightening torque tables – metric bolts and nuts, flared nuts, split flange bolts, O-ring boss piping joints, O-ring boss plugs and the Cummins 102 engine series values – plus the electric wire code, the wire colour and thickness classification, and the millimetre to inch, kilogram to pound, litre to gallon and kg/cm2 to lb/in2 conversion tables.
10 Structure and Function
The biggest chapter in the book. It opens with the radiator, oil cooler, fan and reservoir tank layout, then works through the complete power train: damper and universal joint, torque converter and PTO, transmission control, the transmission itself, transmission control valve, main relief valve and lubrication relief valve. From there it moves into steering and brake control, the bevel gear shaft, steering clutch, steering brake, steering control valve, steering brake valve and reducing valve, then the scavenging pump strainer, power train oil strainer and filter, final drive, main frame, track frame, recoil spring and suspension. The work equipment half of the chapter covers hydraulic piping diagrams, PPC control piping, the PPC valve, PPC charge valve, PPC lock valve, main control valve and its operation, suction valve, piston valve and the work equipment. It closes with the electrical circuit diagram, engine control and the machine monitor system in both gauge-type and monitor-type panel versions. Hydraulic circuit and system diagrams are given for both the angledozer and the straight tiltdozer configuration.
20 Testing and Adjusting
Checks to be carried out before and after repair, the adjustments that follow once a repair is finished, and troubleshooting charts that line up symptoms against their causes so you can work from a complaint to a failing circuit instead of guessing.
30 Disassembly and Assembly
Removal, installation, disassembly and assembly procedures for each component, with the precautions that belong to each step. This is the chapter you have open on the bench.
40 Maintenance Standard
Judgement standards for inspecting parts once they are apart – the point at which a component is worn out of tolerance and has to be replaced rather than reused.
90 Others
Hydraulic circuit diagrams and electric circuit diagrams, together with attachment and option specifications.
Power Train, Steering and Final Drive
The transmission is a planetary gear type with hydraulically actuated multiple disc clutches, three speeds forward and three reverse, and the manual explains it clutch by clutch – which clutch is fixed in reverse, which in forward, and which pairs engage for each of the six speeds. The clutch-by-clutch breakdown of discs and plates is given separately for 3001-4000 and for 4001 and up. Each clutch is explained with its engaged and disengaged states, the piston, plates, discs, pins and return springs, and how ring gear lock-up is achieved.
Steering is covered in equal depth. The steering clutch is a wet, multiple disc, spring boosted type operating through the bevel gear shaft, and the manual walks through clutch engaged, clutch disengaged, brake released, brake applied with the steering lever, and brake applied with the pedal alone. The steering control valve, brake valve, parking brake valve and reducing valve are each shown in cross section with the oil flow paths marked, so you can trace pressure and drain circuits rather than replace parts blindly. Final drive is a single stage spur gear plus single stage planetary reduction, with the sun gear, carrier, ring gear, planet pinions and floating seal identified and the torque path explained.
Work Equipment Hydraulics and PPC Control
The blade and ripper circuits run on PPC control, where each spool in the main control valve is positioned by pilot pressure from a PPC valve rather than by a mechanical linkage. The manual covers the PPC valve internals, the metering spring and centering spring arrangement, and the fine control behaviour during a partial lever stroke, at full stroke and on lever return. It also explains the FLOAT detent mechanism on the lift valve, the unload valve and its preset system, meter-in and meter-out control, compound operation of the lift and tilt valves, and what happens at relief when a cylinder reaches the end of its stroke.
Towing Winch Coverage
The DWT065-1A towing winch is included in this same volume rather than sold as a separate book, which matters if the machine you are working on is fitted with one. Having the winch alongside the tractor chapters means you are not hunting for a second document when the job moves from the drawbar to the drum.
Machine Data You Can Work From
Rated output of the S6D125-1 and S6D125-2 is listed at 149 kW / 1,950 rpm, with maximum torque of 980 Nm at 1,200 rpm, high idling at 2,100 rpm and low idling at 825 rpm. Operating weight runs from 15,420 kg for the bare tractor to 18,230 kg with the straight tiltdozer and 20,800 kg with the straight tiltdozer, ripper and ROPS cab. Track shoes are 510 mm single grouser, 42 per side at 203.2 mm pitch, with eight track rollers and two carrier rollers per side. System pressures, hydraulic tank capacity, blade lift and tilt cylinder dimensions, blade widths and cutting angles are all tabulated in the specification chapter.
Why This Manual Earns Its Place in the Workshop
A D85ESS-2A is a heavy, high-value machine, and the difference between a repair that lasts and one that comes back is almost always in the details – the torque figure, the wear limit, the order in which a piston and spring go back into a clutch cage, the pressure a reducing valve should crack at. Those details are here, written for the serial number range of the machine in front of you rather than for a generic dozer.
With this Komatsu D85ESS-2A and DWT065-1A shop manual you can strip and rebuild the power train, diagnose a steering clutch that will not fully disengage, trace a brake that drags, set the main relief and reducing valve pressures, recondition a final drive, adjust track tension through the recoil spring, service the PPC circuit and repair the work equipment hydraulics. It supports both the fault-finding side of the job, through the problem-and-cause charts in the testing chapter, and the rebuild side, through the disassembly and assembly procedures and the maintenance standards that tell you what to reject. It covers the machine as delivered in both angledozer and straight tiltdozer form, and it carries the winch in the same volume.
