General Safety Rules
The following is a list of safety rules which should be followed during all operations.
Operator Awareness
1. Read this Operator’s Manual and strictly adhere to it. The manual contains important information.
2. An operator must not eat, read, or otherwise divert his attention while operating the machine. Remember-operating is a full-time job.
3. Start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area. Diesel exhaust fumes can be harmful. If it is necessary to operate in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside! Properly maintain the exhaust system to its original design.
4. Don’t operate the machine if you feel that you can- not operate it properly because of fatigue, illness, medication, etc.
5. Don’t smoke when fueling, or fuel up near an open flame. Keep the nozzle in contact with the filler neck to prevent static electric sparks. Shutdown the engine when fueling.
6. Keep your shoes clean. Before entering the opera- tor’s cab, wipe any mud, gravel, moisture or grease from your feet. Slippery shoes could cause momentary loss of control of crucial foot operated controls.
7. Keep the machine clean of debris that may accumulate. Cleanliness is particularly important in the battery compartment of log loaders, delimbers and harvester/processors where the combination of hydraulic oil, pine straw, bark, twigs, and dried leaves may combine to provide the basis for a fire if a spark is present. On scrap loaders the combination of “fluff” and hydraulic oil may have the same result. Fluff is the airbome non-metallic organic fabric produced from used automobiles, appliances, and furniture when these items are processed for scrap metal.
8. The operator and person in charge of the load must observe the following rules:
a. The attachment must not catch on an obstruction when lifting or swinging. Be sure the attachment or other parts of the machine do not snag or strike any obstruction.
b. Avoid sudden starts and stops. Lift carefully, swing gently, brake smoothly. Swinging and engaging swing brake roughly and slamming on brakes, will put shock loadings and possible side loadings on the boom. Unnecessary abuse labels the operator as a beginner. Be a professional.
