DESCRIPTION:

MAINTENANCE SPARK PLUG:

Recommended spark plug is Champion CJ8. Spark plug electrode gap should be 0.025 inch

CARBURETOR:

• Most models are equipped with a Tillotson Model HU diaphragm carburetor. Some models are equipped with a Walbro WA diaphragm carburetor.
• Refer to Tillotson or Walbro section of CARBURETOR SERVICE section for operation and overhaul of carburetor. Initial setting of idle mixture screw and high speed mixture screw is one turn open. Adjust idle speed screw until engine will idle just below clutch engagement speed. Adjust idle mixture screw so engine will accelerate without hesitation.
• High speed mixture screw should be adjusted to obtain optimum performance with engine under cutting load. Be sure mixture settings are not too lean as engine damage will result.

IGNITION:

• Conventional flywheel magneto ignition system with breaker points located behind the flywheel is used on early models and a breakerless capacitor discharge ignition system is used on later models. On models with breaker points, breakerpoint gap should be 0.017 inch (0.43 mm). Ignition timing is fixed but incorrect breaker-point gap will affect timing. Magneto air gap should be 0.010-0.014 inch (0.25-0.35 mm).
• Magneto air gap is adjusted by loosening screws (2-Fig. PN1) and placing 0.012 inch (0.30 mm) shim stock between lamination legs and flywheel magnets. Move coil assembly until lamination legs contact shim stock and tighten screws (2).
• Recheck air gap. On breakerless models, ignition components are mounted outside the flywheel making it unnecessary to remove the flywheel for most ignition service.
