Description

Ford Tractor Series 2000-7000 Service Manual – Volume 3, 1965-1975

This is Volume 3 of the Ford Tractor Service Manual set that covers the 1965 through 1975 Ford 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 7000 series tractors along with the 3400, 3500, 3550, 4400, 4500, 5500 and 5550 variants. The document carries the factory publication number 40200050 and runs 332 pages of step-by-step service procedures, cutaway and exploded illustrations, hydraulic schematics, torque data and special tool references. It picks up where the earlier volumes leave off: the rear half of the tractor and every system bolted to it – the rear axle and brakes, the hydraulic lift system, steering, the front axle, wheels and tyres, accessories, and the process for splitting the tractor when a job requires the front and rear halves separated.

Whether you are running a Dexta 2000, a Super Dexta 3000, a Major 4000 or a Super Major 5000, or one of the US-built 2000/3000/4000/5000/7000 row-crop and utility variants, this manual gives you the same information a Ford dealer technician worked from in the period. If you keep a classic Ford tractor alive – or restore one – the Ford Tractor Series 2000-7000 Service Manual, Volume 3, is the reference you want on the bench.

  • Part 14 – Wheels and Tyres
  • Part 15 – Separating the Tractor

Part 10 – Rear Axle and Brakes

Split into three chapters. Chapter 1 covers the Dexta 2000 and Super Dexta 3000 rear axle and brakes: rear axle shaft assembly overhaul, the differential and differential lock assembly, drive pinion assembly, wheel brakes, transmission handbrake, and brake pedal and linkage overhaul. Chapter 2 handles the same territory for the Major 4000 and Super Major 5000, adding the planetary gear assembly and axle housing, plus the wet disc brake assembly. Adjustment procedures for the differential lock pedal, brake camshaft, and the transmission handbrake are laid out step-by-step. Chapter 3 collects specifications and special tools for the whole part.

Part 11 – Hydraulic Systems

Four lift-cylinder chapters and two pump chapters. For the Dexta 2000, Super Dexta 3000 and Major 4000, the manual walks through the hydraulic schematic, draft control and position control adjustments, lift cylinder overhaul, lift cover overhaul, and the flow control valve plate and linkage. For the Super Major 5000 the sequence repeats with its own linkage layout. The pump section is split by type – the piston pump used on several models, and the tandem gear pump used on the Super Major 5000 and on Ford 4000 with an independent PTO. Pressure-testing procedures, trouble-shooting charts and tolerance tables (lift cylinder bore, lift piston diameter, valve bushing sizes) close the section.

Part 12 – Steering Systems

Nine chapters running the full range of manual and power-assisted steering used across the Ford 2000-7000 series. Topics include the recirculating-ball steering gear for Dexta 2000 / Super Dexta 3000 and for Major 4000 / Super Major 5000, power steering pumps, reservoirs and pipes, the power cylinder overhaul for the Dexta 2000 and Super Dexta 3000, power assist for Major 4000 and Super Major 5000, the hydrostatic steering system on the Ford 4200 Row Crop, and the integral power-assisted steering unit used on Ford 4000 and 5000. Adjustment points, torque values and special tools are given for each variant.

Part 13 – Front Axle

Five chapters covering the front axle across the range: Ford 2000 and Ford 3000 (track adjustment, wheel spindle overhaul, radius rod and ball cap, and front axle and support overhaul), Ford 4000, Ford 5000 and the Ford 4200 Row Crop. Front wheel track adjustment data – including which axle bolt holes give which track setting between 52 in. (132 cm) and 76 in. (193 cm) – plus spindle bushing replacement, thrust bearing service and axle support pin overhaul are laid out in detail, with camber, castor, king pin inclination and toe-in specifications at the back of the part.

Part 14 – Wheels and Tyres

Rear wheel track adjustment for standard and power-adjusted wheels, rear wheel disc changing, tyre removal and installation (including the single front wheel rim), plus cast iron weighting and liquid ballasting of tyres with a full calcium chloride dosage table by tyre size. Specifications list front and rear wheel and tyre options by production code.

Part 15 – Separating the Tractor

The procedure for pulling a Ford tractor apart – separating the engine and front axle assembly from the transmission and rear axle, separating the rear axle from the transmission, and separating the front axle assembly on its own. Two chapters cover the 2000/3000 and the 4000/5000 differences (Select-O-Speed oil cooler tubes, PTO drive shaft alignment, hydraulic pump manifold positions). Reconnection steps and a full tightening torque table close the part.

Part 16 – Accessories and General

Belt pulley and belt pulley guard installation and overhaul for the 2000/3000 and for the 4000/5000, followed by the remote control valves chapter – single and double spool, with and without detents. Control valve removal, spool, check valve, bypass valve and detent overhaul, the detent regulating valve and tractor hydraulic system relief valve pressure tests, plus valve adjustment and detent disabling for specific implement operations are all covered.

Part 17 – Tractor Maintenance Schedule

A short part pointing owners to the correct maintenance schedule for their specific tractor.

What This Ford Tractor Service Manual Delivers in the Workshop

This is the kind of manual you open when the rear axle has to come apart, when the hydraulic lift stops lifting under load, when the steering has play in it, or when the whole tractor has to be split to get at a clutch. Every section starts from a schematic or an exploded view so you can see how the assembly is built before you touch a bolt. Torque values are printed against the fasteners that need them, not buried in a generic chart. Pre-load and end-float settings – drive pinion bearing pre-load, differential bearing pre-load, axle shaft end-play, handbrake pinion backlash – are given with the shim sizes or pull-scale readings that go with them. Where a special tool is genuinely required, the tool number is listed so you know when you need to improvise and when you do not.

Because this is the same content a Ford dealer workshop used in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the procedures assume the tractor is in front of you and the job is real. There is no padding, no simplified description of what a component is, and no high-school explanation of how a differential works – just the sequence, the measurements and the diagrams you need to get the job done correctly the first time.
