Description
John Deere 870D and 872D Motor Grader Parts Catalog PC9450
This is the full John Deere 870D and 872D Motor Grader Parts Catalog, published under document number PC9450 for machines manufactured from 2005 onward. It is the illustrated parts reference for the entire machine, not a service or repair manual – it tells you which part goes where, what it is called, and what the correct part number is for every assembly shown. The catalogue opens with introduction and customer information, product identification number decoding, engine serial number plate decoding, and serial number listing conventions, then moves directly into wheel, axle, engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical, operator station, grading device and ground conditioning tool sections.

What makes this particular catalogue genuinely useful is the way the part numbers are laid out. Every listing is a table with a key number, part number, part name, quantity, serial number applicability, and a remarks column. That means you can look at the exploded illustration, find the key number for the component you are holding, jump into the parts list on the same or facing page, and read off the exact part number along with any notes about substitutions or serial number breakpoints. Where a part changed during production, the serial number column tells you which group of machines it belongs to – so you are not ordering a superseded component that will not fit your machine.
How the Catalog Is Structured
The alphabetical index at the front of PC9450 lists every part name together with a grid reference and a page number, so even if you do not know which assembly a part belongs to, you can look it up by name and be pointed straight to the right page. There is also a numerical index at the back of the publication that lists part numbers against their grid, key and page, which is useful when you already have a number and want to confirm where it is used or find the correct supersession.
Arrows on the illustrations indicate the front of the unit, and right-hand and left-hand sides are always determined by facing the direction of machine forward travel. Box-enclosed illustrations show a key number assigned to all parts sold as a complete service assembly. Complete goods are printed in bold face type and ordered separately – they are not included on a replacement parts order.
Serial number information is listed to show exactly which machines each part fits: a serial number with no dash prefix applies to all machines; a number followed by a dash applies to all machines from that number onward; a dash followed by a number applies to all machines up to and including that number; and two numbers separated by a dash cover the range between and including both. Where asterisks appear in place of a serial number, a serial number change was made and the detail is in the remarks column. Where X’s appear, the exact serial number was not available at the time of publication.
Serial Number Plate Locations
The catalogue documents the location of every serial number plate on the machine. Each 870D and 872D Motor Grader may have up to eight plates: product identification number, engine, transmission, hydraulic pump, front wheel drive, differential, and one each for the left and right front wheel drive motors. The product identification number plate is located below the operator’s platform on the left-hand side of the main frame, and that is the serial number used throughout PC9450 unless otherwise noted in the serial number column. The engine serial number plate is on the left-hand side of the cylinder block above the starting motor. The transmission plate is on the front of the transmission housing above the output shaft. The hydraulic pump plate is on the bottom of the pump, and the front wheel drive hydraulic pump is on the left rear of the transmission with its plate on the bottom of the pump. The HFWD motor plates are on the inside rear of each motor housing. The differential plate is on the cover, right lower, below the driveshaft input.

Engine Identification Covered
The engine serial number plate decoding section explains the first line, which is the engine serial number, and the second line, which is the engine model number. The example printed in the catalogue decodes as RG for John Deere Waterloo Engine Works, 6 cylinders, 081 for 8.1 litres displacement, H for turbocharged diesel with air-to-air intercooler, followed by a six-digit serial number. The model number line prints as 6081HDW13, where DW designates John Deere Davenport Works and the trailing digits define the specific application. This is the engine fitted to the 870D and 872D Motor Grader.
Who This Parts Catalog Is For
Owners, fleet managers, workshop technicians, parts counter staff and independent repair shops all use a catalogue like PC9450 for the same reason: the only reliable way to get the right component is to look it up against the machine’s own parts documentation. Ordering a blade lift cylinder seal kit, a circle drive gearbox component, an HFWD motor bearing, a hydraulic valve section, or a cab door latch by guesswork is how wrong parts end up on the shelf. This PDF lets you confirm the part number, check the quantity, read the remarks, and confirm the serial number applicability before you commit to an order – including the serial-number breakpoints that separate early and later production machines.
Why the Correct Part Numbers Matter
Motor graders are assembled from hundreds of sub-assemblies that look similar but are not interchangeable. The 870D and 872D share the same catalogue but differ in important areas – for example, the front axle, tie rod and wheel lean components differ between the two, and the hydraulic plumbing pages are split by model. Within the same model, later machines may use a different manifold, a different hose, a different seal kit or a different valve section. The remarks column in PC9450 flags those substitutions and serial number breaks directly, so you can see at a glance whether a part applies to your machine or whether a whole-goods kit has to be ordered instead.
