Engine Design and Identification
The opening chapter decodes the MWM engine designation system across the 601 series — aspirated, supercharged, charging-air-cooled, and the 2-valve versus 4-valve cylinder head variants. It covers arrangement (in-line vertical, single acting), direct injection combustion, crankcase construction with overhead crankshaft bearings and crankcase venting, and the fuel system layout with injection pump, governor, and pepperpot nozzle injectors. You also get cylinder designation (number 1 on flywheel end) and the firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4, plus engine rotation direction.
Engine Specifications and Adjustment Data
This is the section you will reach for when setting up an engine. It lists cylinder bore (160 mm), stroke (165 mm), piston surface, stroke volume per cylinder (3.318 l), total stroke volume (19.9 l) and compression ratios for each variant: D 601-6 E at 1:16, TD 601-6 E at 1:15, TBD 601-6(S) E at 1:15, and TBD 601-6K at 1:14.6. Performance and consumption figures are given for n = 1500 1/min under DIN 6270 continuous output, along with start and end of delivery adjustment data across engine speeds from 1000 to 1800 1/min. Valve clearance, nozzle injection pressure, cooling water and lubricant capacities, operating pressures, safety valve settings, starting air pressure, and temperature data (cooling water, sea water, lubricant, exhaust) are all tabulated.
Fuels, Lubricants and Coolants
Diesel fuel requirements according to DIN 51601, BS 2869 (1967) Class A1/A2 and ASTM-D 975-68T No. 1D/2D are specified with limit values. Engine oil prescription is broken down by engine type and fuel used, referencing MIL-L-2104 B, MIL-L-2104 C and S 3 oils, with viscosity guidance for ambient temperatures. Cooling water quality, antifreeze, anti-corrosion oil additives and the correct mixing procedure are described. There is also a section on anti-corrosion oil for interior preservation during prolonged engine stoppage.
Transit, Storage and Installation
Lifting instructions include diagrams showing correct and incorrect rope angles around the lifting eyes. Protection measures for short and lengthy transportation and storage periods are covered. The installation chapter addresses engine room ventilation requirements, permissible engine inclination (longitudinal and transverse, continuous and temporary), piping limits for exhaust back pressure and inlet vacuum, and the full lining-up procedure. Coupling types (Vulkan and Stromag) are described with alignment tolerances and crank respiration measurement using dial gauges.
First-Time Operation and Operating Instructions
Before first start-up, the manual covers cooling system filling, engine oil filling with quantity guidance (approx. 72 litres plus 14 litres for pipes and oil-bearing parts), lubrication priming, and venting of injection pumps and filters. Operating instructions cover air starting (distributor disk and GALI starter) and electrical starting, engine warm-up, engine room ventilation, speed control, monitoring of lubrication, cooling, exhaust, charging air, fuel and starting air systems, and the correct stopping procedure. Low-load operation of turbocharged engines and trial runs for standby duty engines are also included.
Maintenance Instructions and Troubleshooting
The maintenance chapter is extensive and includes a detailed maintenance chart for continuous operation engines and a separate chart for stand-by operation engines, with intervals from daily checks up to 20,000 operating hours. Procedures cover engine oil change, oil filter cleaning, centrifuge cleaning, oil cooler checking, fuel filter cleaning, injector checking and adjustment (including spray pattern assessment), fuel delivery checking by the overflow method, indirect cooling system cleaning, air intake filter cleaning, aftercooler cleaning, cylinder head removal and replacement, valve clearance adjustment for both 2-valve and 4-valve cylinder heads, crankcase vent filter cleaning, air starter disk checking, and exhaust turbo-charger cleaning for both KKK and BBC units. The troubleshooting chapter provides fault-cause tables for starting problems and operational faults, covering everything from insufficient starting air pressure to engine knocking, hunting, excessive temperature and oil contamination.
Why This MWM 601 Series Instruction Book Matters
MWM 601 series engines are robust industrial diesels, but they are not forgiving of guesswork. Incorrect injection pump timing, wrong valve clearance, contaminated fuel or neglected cooling water treatment all lead to expensive damage. This manual gives you the exact adjustment values, torques, clearances, capacities and procedures that MWM specified for these engines — the same information the original operating staff relied on.
Whether you are commissioning a D 601-6 generator set, maintaining a TBD 601-6K with piston cooling, or troubleshooting a TD 601-6 that will not fire, this instruction book covers the full sequence from installation and first filling through to major maintenance and fault-finding. The maintenance charts alone are worth having on the workshop wall.
