Read end to end, the booklet follows the logical order of a vehicle being retired. It starts with the environmental and legal background to end-of-life treatment, moves into what has to come out of the truck before anything else can be touched, then works system by system from the engine bay through the driveline and chassis and finishes inside the cab. That ordering is deliberate: several procedures depend on an earlier one having been done, and the text says so where it matters.

Draining, Fluid Volumes and Hazardous Materials

The hazardous substances chapter is the practical heart of the Scania P G R S series dismantling information manual. It tabulates the lubricants, fluids and components recovered during pre-treatment along with approximate volumes, which is exactly what you need when planning containment and disposal capacity. Engine oil is given as 27-38 litres on 7-9 litre engines, 40-44 litres on the 13 litre and 32-47 litres on the 16 litre. Coolant runs 30-52 litres, 40-62 litres and 45-102 litres across the same engine sizes. Fuel filter housing and high pressure fuel pump residues are listed for D9/13 XPI, D9/13/16 XPI, D16 XPI and D13 PDE installations.

Driveline and chassis volumes follow the same pattern: gearbox 13-50 litres, transfer gearbox 6.5 litres, retarder around 7.5 litres, M33 electric machine 5.5 litres, Opticruise longitudinal stroke damper 0.09 litres, steering axle 2.2 litres of ATF, axle gear 9-13 litres, bogie-geared axle 11-12 litres, ZF portal axle 19.5 litres, hub reduction gears 2 litres and ZF hubs 0.7 litres. Cab tilt pump and cylinder hold 1.7-2 litres of Pentosin oil. R134a charges are given for the A/C at roughly 1,200 g and the cab refrigerator at 30-47 g.

Alongside the volumes, the manual carries specific warnings on isocyanates released above 150 degrees C during grinding, welding and cutting of painted parts, and a full procedure for fire-damaged vehicles covering weakened lifting points, unpunctured gas dampers as an explosion risk, immediate battery disconnection and contaminated wash water.

Identifying and Sorting Plastics

A large illustrated section explains how Scania marks polymer parts to Scania Standard STD 387, itself based on ISO 11469, and how to read those marks. Designations covered include ABS, ASA, EPDM, HDPE, NR, PA, PBT, PMMA, PC, PC+PBT, PC+ABS, PE, PP, PUR, PVC, TPE and UP, each with a note on where Scania uses it and how well it recycles. A compatibility matrix shows which base materials can be mixed, which tolerate only trace contamination below 5 percent, and which must never be combined. Filler codes such as T for talcum, M for mineral and G for glass are explained, as is the part numbering and date marking convention. Fourteen pages of colour-coded overview illustrations then show where each material sits on the vehicle, so a dismantler can sort by sight rather than by guesswork.

Lifting, Supporting and Safe Access

Before anything is removed the truck has to be held safely, and the booklet devotes a full chapter to it. It covers raising with a jack and with wheel lifts, chocking and parking brake release, supporting under front and rear axles, supporting vehicles with a heavy-duty front with and without tool 99 363, supporting vehicles fitted with front underrun protection, and positioning stands under the rear frame including the case of rear-mounted batteries with air suspension. Air-suspended vehicles get their own treatment: emptying the bellows, fitting the short 99 678 or long 99 677 safety prop between spring shackle and frame, the 7.5 tonne per prop axle load limit, prop removal, and the inspection routine for screw joints, release button, feet and thread condition.

Procedures throughout the Scania dismantling information manual are tied to named Scania tool numbers, which makes it easy to check what you already have on the bench. Engine lifting uses yoke 99 063, chain 98 094 and lifting eyes 99 611 for V8 or 99 637 for 9 and 13 litre engines, with engine support 99 318, adapter 99 470 and completing kit 2 377 964. Coolant is recovered with trolley 588 540 (or the earlier 588 450 with adapter 99 301), reductant with draining equipment 588 682 and filter 588 684, and fuel with the 630 litre stainless steel suction unit 588 794. Gearbox and instrument panel work calls on base bracket 99 644, bracket kit 99 646, gearbox jack 587 313, machine lift 588 966 and lifting accessory 2 426 173. Refrigerant recovery uses recycling station 587 627, and panel removal uses tool kit 588 390.

Pyrotechnics, Airbags and High-Risk Components

Several items on these trucks are genuinely dangerous to remove without instruction, and the manual treats them accordingly. The steering wheel signal cap airbag (H14) has a step-by-step latch clamp release using a T30 Torx, preceded by cutting power and waiting at least ten seconds, and a first-aid section covering the sodium azide, potassium nitrate, silicon oxide and iron oxide present in an undeployed unit. Curtain airbags H30 and H31 are documented separately for driver and passenger sides, with the preparatory panel and bed removal, connector release, cable duct handling and rivet drilling, plus a clear note that these are classed as pyrotechnic and often as explosive goods once outside the vehicle. The spring brake chamber section carries an explicit instruction that the unit must not be dismantled because of spring tension, and battery removal covers sulphuric acid and lead exposure along with EU producer responsibility for recycling.
