What this compilation actually covers

This is not a single thin booklet. The Case IH 743 745 844 856 955 1055 1056 Tractor Series Service Repair Manual stitches together separately numbered Don books so a shop can overhaul the Neuss engine family and then stay on the tractor for transmission, Center Mechanical Front Drive, lift hydraulics and cab systems. Section 2000 states that it covers all Neuss-build direct-injection versions, naturally aspirated and turbocharged, and that it is meant to be used with the electrical and fuel/turbocharger manuals also present in this file.

Engine families named on the section title pages are D-155, D-179, D-206, D-239, D-246, D-268, D-310, D-358, DT-239, DT-358 and DT-402. Bore, stroke and displacement tables give three-cylinder displacements from 2536 cm³ (D-155) and 2934 cm³ (D-179), four-cylinder figures from 3382 cm³ (D-206) through 4389 cm³ (D-268), and six-cylinder figures from 5073 cm³ (D-310) to 6587 cm³ (DT-402). Compression ratio is listed as 16:1 except 15.1:1 on D-268 and DT-402. Firing orders, hot valve clearance of 0.30 mm (0.012 in), cooling target of 90–96 °C, oil-pressure warning-light values and crankcase blow-by limits are tabulated in the same specification block.

Because the engine and injection-pump books were written for the whole Neuss family, pump flow-bench sheets also list many other machine applications that share those engines. Use the tractor model and pump number on the unit in front of you when you pick a test sheet.

  • Series 100 / Section 10000 — How It Works: Center Mechanical Front Drive

Taken together, those books give a technician the diagnosis charts, wear limits, torque steps, timing methods and overhaul sequences needed to rebuild the engine, set a Bosch distributor pump, service the turbocharger, strip a synchromesh gearbox, overhaul CMFD hardware and test Sens-o-drautic or later hydraulic lifts.

Engine overhaul and running-in

Section 2000 opens with safety rules, priming of the lubricating system, gasket practice and an engine run-in schedule both with and without a dynamometer. After a rebuild the text requires a no-load warm-up at three-quarter rated speed to 80–85 °C, then cylinder-head retorque before the timed load steps. A later note states that field re-torquing is not required when the red-bordered “maintenance-free” cylinder head gasket is fitted.

Service diagnosis tables walk through failure to turn, no-start, lack of power, poor compression, overheating, misfire, oil consumption, idle faults, knocks, smoke and bearing failure. Causes stay practical: hydrostatic lock, clogged air cleaner, mistimed injection pump, weak valve springs, leaking crankshaft seals, diluted oil.

Mechanical chapters give cam lobe lift 8.10 mm, journal and bushing sizes, idler-gear backlash, cylinder-sleeve protrusion 0.08–0.12 mm with shim thicknesses, three-step main-bearing and cylinder-head torque sequences by cylinder count, connecting-rod angle tightening, front and rear oil-seal fitting, 4-cylinder balancer service, flywheel ring-gear shrink fit at 200–270 °C, oil-pump backlash checks and thermostat stroke tests. Valve lash is reset with the engine hot. Engine testing covers oil pressure at the main gallery and, on turbo engines, intake-manifold boost.

Fuel, turbocharger and electrics

Fuel-system material covers EP/VA and VE pump installation, static timing in degrees BTDC by engine and application, plunger-stroke checks on pumps without a timing window, nozzle-holder service and an opening-pressure band of 20–21 MPa. Turbocharger pages split AIResearch and KKK (Schwitzer) units, with shaft running clearance, end play and boost checks plus a clean-out path after compressor-wheel failure. Injection-pump section 5 is a long run of fuel-rator and flow-bench sheets for VA … CR … and VE … F … pumps, including IHC and Bosch numbers used on 743 / 743XL, 844 / 844XL, 955, 956, 1055, 1056, 1255 and 1455 applications.

Section 4000 then treats DC generators and regulators, alternators (output tests at 60 °C housing temperature, slip-ring limits, stator and rotor resistance) and Bosch JD / JF starting motors with draw-in voltage, no-load and lock-torque figures for 12 V and 24 V units.

Driveline, CMFD and hydraulics

Two transmission books separate the XL four-cylinder gearboxes from the 955 / 1055 / 956 / 1056 family. Both give synchroniser dimensions, bevel-gear backlash 0.20–0.25 mm, lubrication-pump output (approximately 7 l/min at rated speed on the XL book) and inspection of bearings and dog teeth. Center Mechanical Front Drive coverage is unusually complete: switches and controls, steering cylinder, axle, shaft, transfer box, accumulator (844XL, 856XL, 956XL, 1056XL), valve, differential and final drives, plus a “How It Works” explanation. Transfer-box clutch-disc clearance is specified at 0.80–1.80 mm; axle-to-bearing-cap clearance and sun-gear end play appear in the later CMFD books. Front-wheel toe-in is given as 0 to 5 mm in the steering-cylinder specifications.

Sens-o-drautic section 8405 is written for 743XL, 745XL, 844XL and 856XL. It explains draft and position control, then moves through troubleshooting, test procedures, hydraulic-lift teardown, draft-control valve spring loads, lower-link sensing adjustment and auxiliary valves. Section 8410 repeats the lift story for the 955 / 1055 / 956 / 1056 group, with dual-element gear-pump capacity, pilot-stream pressure checks, cushion-valve and lowering-valve spring data, and position / draft actuator travel loads.

Chassis, brakes and cab systems on the larger models

Section 9915 chassis work on 1255, 1455, 1255XL and 1455XL reaches cab dimensions and weight, front-axle end play and toe-in for 2WD and 4WD, brake-pedal springs, Westinghouse compressor data where an air system is fitted, dual-clutch apply pressures and radiator test pressure. Section 9920 air conditioning for 956XL, 1056XL, 1255XL and 1455XL specifies refrigerant R12 to Case IH specification B6, a five-cylinder Sanden wobble-plate compressor, sight-glass charging, high- and low-pressure switches and special hose-coupling torques.

With this file on the bench you can diagnose a Neuss diesel that will not start or will not make power, time a Bosch VA or VE pump, measure sleeve protrusion, follow the three-step head and main-bearing torque maps, rebuild an XL or 955-family transmission, set CMFD clutch clearance and test Sens-o-drautic draft control against the printed spring and pressure figures. Those procedures and limits are what keep a rebuilt engine from scoring on first start and what keep a lift or front-drive clutch from failing after assembly.
