Section H – Steering System

The steering section opens with a numerical list of special service tools required for the procedures in this manual, including seal fitting tools, hexagon spanners (55 mm through 125 mm A/F), and tool detail references. Technical data follows for the hydraulic steer unit, covering the 200 OSPC, 250 OSPC, and 160 OSPC models with volumetric displacement figures (200 cc/rev, 250 cc/rev, and 160 cc/rev respectively). Relief valve operating pressure is listed at 120 +/- 3 bar (122 +/- 3.5 kgf/cm², 1740 +/- 50 lbf/in²) at 1500 revs/min. Shock valve operating pressure is 175 – 190 bar (178 – 199 kgf/cm², 2538 – 2756 lbf/in²) for the 200 OSPC and 160 OSPC models, while the 250 OSPC does not have a shock valve fitted.

Basic operation is described for both 2-wheel steer and 4-wheel steer machines, with the main components identified: priority valve, load sensing steer unit, and double acting power track rod rams. The steer mode selection system is explained, covering 2-wheel steer, 4-wheel steer, and crab steer modes, including the three-position switch, control unit, steer mode control valve solenoids, indicator lights, and proximity sensors that prevent mode changes until the wheels are in the straight ahead position.

Steer circuit schematics are provided for 2-wheel steer machines and both types of 4-wheel steer machines (Steer Mode Valve Type 1 and Type 2). Component keys identify the priority valve, steer unit, shock valves, steering system relief valve, steer mode control valve, power track rod rams, pumps, hydraulic tank, and steering pressure test point. Circuit descriptions then detail steer unit operation in neutral, left turn, right turn, right turn unassisted (engine stopped), shock valve operation, and 2-wheel steer and crab steer modes. Priority valve operation is covered for both neutral and turning conditions.

The electrical system chapter covers PCB (relay) controlled steer mode and ECU controlled steer mode, with full wires and connectors information, earth points, component keys, and connector locations. Diagnostic blink codes are provided for applicable machines from serial number 1327630, with fault descriptions and actions for 1, 2, and 3 flash codes.

Fault finding tables address five major fault categories: steering wheel difficult to turn, steering wheel turns on its own, machine will not turn when the steering wheel is turned, steering fails to respond to selected mode (4WS machines only), and steering fails to phase accurately or drifts out of phase during operation (4WS machines only). Each table lists probable causes and recommended actions.

Service procedures include hydraulic pressure tests (standby pressure and steering pressure), steer priority valve cleaning, bleeding the system for both 2-wheel and 4-wheel steer machines, re-phasing the road wheels, proximity switch setting, steer mode valve solenoid operation checking, and checking components for internal hydraulic leakage. Detailed removal and replacement procedures are provided for the priority valve (including dismantle and assemble with torque settings), power track rod, link arms (with wheel alignment check), rams (dismantle and assemble with torque settings), steer mode valve Type 1 and Type 2 (removal, replacement, dismantle, and assemble), and the hydraulic steer unit (removal, replacement, and full dismantle and assemble procedures).
