Description

Gas Turbine Engine Lubrication and Air System – Aircraft Maintenance Technician Training Manual

This AMT/PP002 Module 1 Gas Turbine Engine Lubrication and Air System training manual is a complete 127-page instructional resource built for aircraft maintenance technicians. Published by Ethiopian Aviation University / Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy (Revision 0, December 2021), it walks through the two systems every turbine engine technician has to master: the lubrication system that keeps bearings and gears alive, and the air system that cools, seals, and controls the compressor and turbine.

Because a gas turbine engine carries only one basic rotating assembly plus its accessory gears, the lubrication system’s job is not the same as on a reciprocating engine. The manual explains that difference from the opening page, then builds into full dry-sump and wet-sump architectures, their component-level hardware, their instrumented cockpits, and the maintenance practices that keep them serviceable.

Chapters Covered

Section 1 – Engine Lubrication System

  • Principle of engine lubrication – definition and importance, functions of engine lubricants, friction types, and 14 CFR Β§33.71 regulation
  • Engine lubricants – classification, properties (viscosity, viscosity index, specific gravity, colour, cloud point, pour point, flash and fire point, carbon residue, ash), requirements, aviation grease, and special engine lubricants
  • Gas turbine engine lubrication system – methods of lubrication, dry-sump and wet-sump layouts and operation, and system components (oil tank, oil pump, oil filter, pressure regulating and relief valves, sump, oil cooler, air/oil separator, oil nozzles, and debris monitoring)
  • Typical dry-sump oil subsystems – supply, pressure, scavenge, and breather subsystems
  • Oil system indication – pressure, quantity, temperature, and filter condition indicators
  • Lubrication system maintenance practices – inspection, testing, troubleshooting, servicing, oil change, flushing, removal and installation, pressure adjustment, and breather pressure checks

Section 2 – Engine Air System

  • Engine air system fundamentals
  • Air subsystems – turbine clearance control (HPTACC and LPTACC), anti-icing systems, bearing compartment sealing, internal cooling, external cooling, compressor airflow control (VBV, VSV, TBV), and external air services
  • Typical turbine engine air systems – system description and operation
  • Maintenance practice – inspection, testing, troubleshooting, removal and installation of HPTACC, LPTACC, and TBV valves, and manual operation of the VSV and VBV actuation systems

What This Training Manual Provides

The first half is a full walkthrough of the lubrication system – from why oil must wet rough metal surfaces and hold them apart, through every property used to grade an aviation lubricant, into the hardware itself. The oil tank, positive-displacement pressure and scavenger pumps, wire-mesh and pleated fibre filters, last-chance filters, pressure regulating and relief valves, air/oil separators, oil-to-fuel and air oil coolers, oil jets, and magnetic chip detectors each get their own treatment with operating principles and illustrations. The pressure, scavenge, and breather subsystems of a dry-sump system are then shown as a whole, followed by the oil pressure, quantity, temperature, and filter bypass indicating systems and their cockpit displays.

The second half turns to the engine air system. Turbine clearance control is broken into High Pressure Turbine Active Clearance Control (HPTACC) and Low Pressure Turbine Active Clearance Control (LPTACC), explaining how cooling air shrinks the case to tighten blade tip clearances at altitude. Bearing compartment sealing covers carbon seals, labyrinth seals, and the bearing types they protect. Internal cooling is separated into low pressure, intermediate pressure, and high pressure air paths – including the nozzle guide vane and turbine blade cooling schemes. Compressor airflow control is covered through the Variable Bleed Valve (VBV), Variable Stator Vane (VSV), and Transient Bleed Valve (TBV) systems, including their EEC/HMU control loops and LVDT/RVDT position feedback.

The final section is hands-on maintenance practice: how to inspect the VBV ring guide pads and steel parts, how to remove and install the HPTACC valve, LPTACC valve, and TBV valve on an engine (with torque values, seal and gasket handling, and safety-wire steps), and how to manually operate the VSV and VBV actuation systems using a hydraulic hand pump. The oil system troubleshooting chart covers excessive oil consumption, high or low indicated oil pressure, high or low oil temperature, and oil foaming – each with isolation steps and remedies.

Put This Training Manual To Work

Whether you are an AMT student working through the module, an instructor preparing a lubrication and air system lesson, or a technician who needs a clear reference on HPTACC, LPTACC, TBV, VSV, and VBV hardware, this Gas Turbine Engine Lubrication and Air System training manual gives you the theory, the system layouts, and the step-by-step maintenance procedures in one document. It covers the specific procedures – torque values, pressure settings, safetying – that separate a correct repair from a repeat visit, along with the regulation (14 CFR Β§33.71) that governs lubrication system design.
