Four-language workshop manual (German, English, French, Italian) for the DEUTZ air-cooled diesel engines B/FL 911, 912, 912 W and 913 – covering specification data, adjustment, cylinder unit, crankshaft, blower end, fuel injection and complete engine overhaul.
Description
This is the workshop manual published by KlΓΆckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG for the air-cooled DEUTZ diesel engines of the B/FL 911/912/W/913 family. Issued in May 1983 under publication number 291 1908, it is presented in four languages side by side β German, English, French and Italian β so the same procedure can be read in whichever language the technician prefers. The manual covers the complete engine range from the two-cylinder F2L 912 through to the six-cylinder BF6L 913 C, including the two-stage combustion 912 W models and the turbocharged 913 series.

- 6 – Gearcase: timing gear train disassembly and reassembly
- 7 – Flywheel side: flywheel end work
- 8 – Fuel injection system: injection pump work, injection lines, delivery settings
- 9 – Auxiliaries: auxiliary assemblies and their service
- 10 – Complete engine: dismantling and reassembling the engine as a whole
- 10 – Turbochargers (KKK): turbocharger service on the charged 913 engines
- 11 – Special tools: the special tooling required for the above procedures
The document follows the practical order a workshop would use: identify the engine, check it, then strip and rebuild it. Specification tables and tightening values come first, then measurement and adjustment procedures, and only then the step-by-step disassembly of the cylinder unit, rotating assembly and timing gear. Fuel injection, governing and turbocharging are handled in dedicated chapters, and the whole thing closes with the special tool list. Throughout, the four language columns sit alongside each other, so a translated term can be cross-checked against a second language when the wording does not read quite right.
What a Technician Can Do With This Manual
This is not an owner’s handbook with fluid capacities and a fuse layout. It is the workshop document the DEUTZ service network itself would have used in the 1980s and 1990s. It assumes a trained mechanic, a clean bench and the correct special tools, and it goes straight into the procedures that matter in a rebuild:
- Set valve clearance correctly on F2, F3, F4, F5 and F6 cylinder engines, including the overlap-position method used on the larger engines.
- Determine top dead centre with the official dial gauge and graduated scale, or without the graduated scale using marks on the belt pulley.
- Check and adjust the beginning of delivery (FΓΆrderbeginn) β on the F2L with the DEUTZ or BOSCH pump, on the hand-cranked F2L, and on every engine from three cylinders upwards.
- Test the injection nozzles, read spray patterns and adjust opening pressure using shims or, on the FL 912 W, the adjusting screw.
- Check piston crown clearance with lead wire and correct it with compensating shims under the cylinder.
- Strip and rebuild the cylinder head β valve seat rings, valve guides, valve rotators, rocker arm brackets and pushrods.
- Remove and check pistons, rings and connecting rods, including the weight-class coding carried on the rods.
- Inspect and recondition the crankshaft, including a magnet-flux crack check, journal gauging and permissible regrind limits.
- Remove and install the camshaft on F2L and multi-cylinder engines, with the correct timing mark alignment between camshaft gear and crankshaft gear.
- Service the mass balancing gear unit on front-end drive or centre-drive B/F4L 912 and 913 engines.
- Work on the blower end β belt pulley, tensioner, idler, radial seal and vibration damper.
- Remove and install the exhaust gas thermostat and test whether it is regulating the cooling blower correctly.
Beyond the procedures, the specification chapter carries the figures a workshop actually needs: compression pressures, injection opening pressures, valve and injector setting values, tightening torques and angle-of-turn figures for cylinder head bolts, main and big-end bearing shell sizes with their wall thicknesses, journal diameter and ovality limits, and the running clearances for main and big-end bearings. Because these are the same values printed in the DEUTZ service documentation, a rebuild carried out against this manual can be brought back to specification rather than to a best guess.
Multilingual Format
The manual is arranged in four parallel language columns β German, English, French and Italian β running down every page. That means the same instruction can be read in whichever of the four languages the technician prefers, and terms or tool names can be cross-referenced between languages when the same operation is being described. For workshops servicing mixed fleets, or for technicians working alongside colleagues who use a different language, this is a genuine practical advantage over the single-language editions.
Who This Manual Suits
The B/FL 911/912/W/913 family is one of the most widely used air-cooled industrial diesel ranges ever built. These engines were fitted to agricultural tractors, construction equipment, generator sets, compressors, fork-lift trucks, marine drives and stationary power units. Because they are air-cooled, many remain in service where liquid-cooled engines would be a liability. Owners and independent workshops that still maintain them need documentation that reaches the specification level, not an operator’s booklet.
- Independent diesel workshops undertaking top-end or full rebuilds.
- Agricultural and construction equipment mechanics working on Deutz-powered machinery.
- Generator, compressor and marine engine technicians.
- Restorers of tractor and industrial engines who need original settings.
- Fleet maintenance departments keeping older Deutz-engined equipment running.

The DEUTZ B/FL 911/912/W/913 Air-Cooled Diesel Engine Workshop Manual is supplied as a PDF download. There is no shipping and no waiting. The file opens on any laptop, tablet or phone, and every page can be printed at full size if a paper copy is preferred in the workshop. Keep it on the bench computer, load it on the phone, or print only the pages needed for a particular job β the manual is the same four-language workshop document either way.
Whether you are setting injection timing on an F2L 912, replacing a valve seat ring on an F6L 911, reconditioning the crankshaft of a BF6L 913, or working through a complete rebuild of a 912 W two-stage combustion engine, this workshop manual gives you the procedures, the sequence and the specification values the job calls for. Download it and put it to work.
