The manual opens with a full general description of the aircraft β€” overall dimensions, wing and tail surface areas, chords, dihedral, sweepback, aspect ratios, fuselage cross-section, alighting gear tread and wheelbase, shock strut and wheel specifications, engine and propeller data, and tank capacities β€” before moving into the work a mechanic actually performs on the line. The ground operation chapter covers priming, cowl flap settings, backfiring, over-rich mixtures, fuel booster pump checks, fuel tank selector valve checks, and propeller feathering. The ground handling chapter covers hoisting the complete aircraft, fuselage, outer wing panel, horizontal stabilizer, vertical stabilizer, rudder, engine assembly, and propeller; jacking the entire aircraft, empennage, main wheel axles, and main wheel brace strut ends; leveling for weight and balance; mooring in high winds; parking; towing from front and tail; and taxiing precautions.

The servicing section is unusually detailed. It gives the procedures and specifications for fuelling and draining the fuel tanks and sumps, filling and draining the oil tanks, filling the alcohol tank, filling and draining the water supply tanks, filling and draining the hydraulic reservoir, inflating the main pressure accumulator, inflating and filling the main and tail gear shock struts, inflating the main and tail gear tires, filling the batteries, servicing the hand fire extinguishers, charging the CO2 cylinders, charging the high-pressure oxygen cylinder, charging the brake emergency air cylinder, and servicing the toilet. The lubrication chapter and the lubrication chart in figure 1-42 give the points to lubricate, the lubricant to use, the method of application, and the frequency interval.

The airframe group chapters cover the wing group (outer panels, center section, wing tips, wing-to-fuselage fillets), the empennage (horizontal and vertical stabilizers and their tips), and the surface controls. The surface controls section is the heart of the manual and covers control cable construction, fittings, inspection for broken wires, pulley and fairlead routing, cable routing master drawings, rubstrips, and a troubleshooting chart for sluggish, stiff, binding, or erratic controls. Separate chapters handle each control surface and tab β€” ailerons, aileron geared tabs, aileron trim, elevators, elevator spring control tabs, elevator trim tabs, rudder, rudder geared tab, rudder trim, and wing flaps β€” each with removal, balancing, hinge wear tolerances, installation, and adjustment procedures. The surface controls rigging chart collects the flight compartment control positions, surface positions, and stop positions for the aileron, aileron trim, elevator, elevator trim tab, rudder, rudder trim, and wing flap systems.

What This Manual Enables

With this Douglas DC-3 R4D-8 maintenance manual, a technician can carry out the full range of field maintenance tasks on the R4D-8 and R4D-8Z airframe, engines, accessories, and instruments. The manual supports engine starting and ground operation, fuel system management and selector valve checks, propeller feathering checks, hoisting and jacking (including emergency jacking at the main wheel axles), leveling, mooring, parking, towing, and taxiing. It provides the servicing specifications β€” fuel grade, oil grade, hydraulic fluid specification, tire pressures, shock strut inflation pressures and extensions, battery electrolyte levels, and fire extinguisher charging weights β€” needed to keep the aircraft serviceable.

The surface controls chapters give the exact rigging tensions, control surface throws, cable tensions, and adjustment sequences for the aileron, elevator, rudder, and wing flap systems, along with the balancing procedures and hinge wear limits that determine when a control surface must be rebalanced or a hinge replaced. The lubrication chapter lists the points to lubricate, the lubricant to use, the method of application, and the frequency interval.

The manual also includes the 1998 Boeing All Operator Letters that transmit the FAA airworthiness directive for operating in severe icing conditions (AD 98-04-35), adding the Limitations and Normal Procedures revisions that prohibit flight in severe icing, restrict autopilot use, and describe the visual cues and exit procedures for severe icing. A second 1998 AOL clarifies the terminology and regulatory requirements for manufacturing FAA-approved replacement parts, including parts marking and the difference between Boeing type design data and FAA production approval.
